Litvinov, Dmitrii Ivanovich

 

Born Dec. 17 (29), 1854, in Moscow, died July 5, 1929, in Leningrad. Soviet botanist.

Litvinov graduated from the Moscow Technical School in 1879. He was a curator of the Botanical Museum of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg from 1898 until his death. He studied the higher plants of European Russia, the Caucasus, Middle Asia, Siberia, and Manchuria. Litvinov wrote a number of works on the historical geography of plants, dealing particularly with the origin of the flora of the steppes and of southern pine forests (Geobotanical Notes on the Flora of European Russia, 1891). He continued publication of S. I. Korzhinskii’s Herbarium of Russian Flora.
