Tret’Iakov, Dmitrii Konstantinovich

Born Oct. 24 (Nov. 5), 1878, in the village of Shumorovo, Mologa District, Yaroslavl Province; died Sept. 26,1950. Soviet zoologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1929); Honored Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR (1940). Member of the CPSU from 1945.

Tret’iakov graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1900 and worked there as an assistant. From 1912 to 1941 he was a professor at Novorossiia University (now the University of Odessa). From 1941 to 1944 he worked at the Institute of Zoo-biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR at Ufa, and from 1944 to 1950 he worked at the academy’s Institute of Zoology, serving as director from 1944 to 1948. From 1944 to 1948 he was a professor at the University of Kiev.

Tret’iakov did research on the bone, connective tissue, circulatory and nervous systems, and sense organs of lower vertebrates, especially the lateral line organs offish. He also studied the origin of chordates and echinoderms.

Tret’iakov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a medal.
