Ovtsyn, Dmitrii Leont’evich

 

Dates of birth and death unknown. Russian hydrographer.

From 1734 to 1738, Ovtsyn led a unit of the Second Kamchatka Expedition on a survey of the Kara Sea coast east of the Ob’ River. In the summer of 1737 his unit went from the Ob’ to th Enisei, making the first hydrographic description of this part of the Siberian seacoast. In 1741, Ovtsyn took part in V. Bering’s voyage to America. A cape on the Taimyr Peninsula and a strait between the Olenii and Sibiriakov islands were named after Ovtsyn.
