Brewer, David J. (Josiah)

(1837–1910) Supreme Court justice; born in Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey. His American missionary parents brought him to the U.S.A. at age one. President Benjamin Harrison named him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1890–1910) where he strictly adhered to the limits of federal power as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
