Brezhnev, Dmitrii Danilovich

Born Oct. 25 (Nov. 7), 1905, in the village of Pisklovo, Troitskoe volost (small rural district), Kursk District, Kursk Province. Soviet grower and breeder of plants. Member of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1956) and its first vice-president (1956-61 and from 1968). Member of the CPSU since 1926.

Brezhnev graduated from the Voronezh Agricultural Institute in 1933. He was director of the Akhtubinsk Zone Experimental Station (1933-34) and the Gribovo Selection Experimental Station (1934-36). From 1937 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1950 he was head of the department of vegetable crops at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Plant Growing and has been its director since 1966. He participated in the creation of several valuable varieties of tomato. His principal works are on questions of the biology of vegetable crops and the problem of heterosis.

He was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1956-61. He was a deputy to the fourth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, six other orders, and various medals. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1952. He is a member of the Agricultural Academy of the German Democratic Republic (1958).
