Diacrii

Diacrii

(also Diakrioi), one of the three political groupings in Attica in the sixth century B.C. (along with the Parali [Shore] and the Pedieis [Plains]). Various opinions exist concerning the identity of the Diacrii: some see them as the land-hungry peasantry of the mountainous country of Attica, which is called Diacria (hence the political party’s name); others, as the Athenian urban poor, possibly the metics (resident aliens), or as the free hired laborers of the mines at Laurium, or the agricultural hired workers. In the political struggle of the time, the Diacrii supported Pisistratus.
