Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services
TRICARE (trī'kār) Health insurance coverage provided by the U.S. Department of Defense for military personnel and their dependents when governmental medical facilities are not available: covers active or retired members of all branches of the military service plus the Public Health Service, NOAA, and dependents of military personnel killed on active duty. Formerly known as CHAMPUS/CHAMPVA (q.v.).
