Dmitrii Nikolaevich Sobolev
Sobolev, Dmitrii Nikolaevich
Born July 25 (Aug. 6), 1872, in the village of Khripeli, in what is now Yaroslavl Oblast; died Mar. 16, 1949, in Kharkov. Soviet geologist. Doctor of geomineralogical sciences (1934); Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1935).
Sobolev graduated from Warsaw University in 1899, after which he worked at the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute and studied the Paleozoic deposits of the Kielce-Sandomierz Uplands. In 1914 he became a professor and was appointed to the chair of geology at the University of Kharkov. His main works dealt with studies of Devonian deposits, the tectonics of the Eastern European Platform, and the geological structure of the Ukraine. Sobolev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
