Dmitrii Obruchev

Obruchev, Dmitrii Vladimirovich

Born July 13 (26), 1900, in the city of Luga, in what is now Leningrad Oblast; died Dec. 21, 1970, in Moscow. Soviet paleontologist. Doctor of biological sciences (1943). Son of Vladimir Afanas’evich Obruchev.

Upon graduating from Moscow State University in 1924, Obruchev first worked on the Geological Committee and then at the Paleontological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1957 he became head of a laboratory at the institute. His main works were devoted to the evolution of the oldest vertebrates; much of his research, especially on Devonian fishes, was the basis for the detailed classification and correlation of Devonian deposits.

Obruchev was an honorary member of the New York Academy of Science (1937) and of the Linnaean Society in London (1969). He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and several medals.
