Asymmetry in Art

Asymmetry in Art

a creative method that brings variety and dynamics to a composition.

Asymmetry is characteristic of baroque, rococo, and romantic art. In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art and in impressionist painting, asymmetry of composition produces the effect of lack of constraint and natural spontaneity; in modern art it increases the singularity and whimsicality of the image. In contemporary architecture, free asymmetrical design and volumetric solutions dictated by the function of a structure are common.
