diagnostic and treatment centre

diagnostic and treatment centre

(1) A type of surgical unit introduced in the UK to deliver routine (non-emergency, elective) operations for which there is an NHS waiting list. Most DTC cases are day surgeries or require only a short hospital stay. Because DTCs do elective work only, they are unaffected by unscheduled emergency work, resulting in fewer cancelled operations than other NHS hospitals.
Types of DTCs
• NHS DTCs—run by NHS providers such as NHS Trusts, and meant to provide an extra 150,000 operations/year for the NHS.
• Private (independent) sector DTCs—run by private companies (e.g., BUPA) or consortia..
(2) A popular term for an all-inclusive medical centre, which provides routine rather than surgical or emergency medical care.
