Bridgehead a defensive position established to cover or defend a bridge crossing. The forward edge of defense is usually set up at a distance to prevent enemy artillery from firing on the crossing. The flanks of the position run up to the river. Guard ships are set at upstream and downstream waterways to protect the crossing against destruction by floating mines and incendiary vessels.
