Bellingshausen

 

a scientific station on King George (Waterloo) Island in the South Shetland group of islands, the first Soviet station on the shores of Western Antarctica. It was established by the 13th Soviet Antarctic Expedition. It was opened on Feb. 22, 1968, on the southwestern extremity of the island (62° 12’ S lat., 58° 56’ W long.). Regular aerometeorological, glaciological, geomagnetic observational, geomorphological, biological, and medical research is done at the station. It was named in honor of F. F. Bellingshausen.
