Cavendish balance

[′kav·ən·dish ′bal·əns] (engineering) An instrument for determining the constant of gravitation, in which one measures the displacement of two small spheres of mass m, which are connected by a light rod suspended in the middle by a thin wire, caused by bringing two large spheres of mass M near them.
