Briggs, Robert William

(1911–83) developmental biologist; born in Watertown, Mass. He taught at McGill University, Montreal (1938–42), moved to the Institute for Cancer Research, Philadelphia (1942–56), then joined the University of Indiana (1956–74), continuing his scientific writing after his retirement. He made major contributions to studies of nuclear transplantation and nucleocytoplasmic interaction in amphibian eggs and embryos.
