Brikner, Aleksandr Gustavovich

 

Born July 24 (Aug. 5), 1834, in St. Petersburg; died Nov. 3 (15), 1896, in Jena, Germany. Russian historian. Educated in Germany.

Brikner lectured at the universities of St. Petersburg (1865-67), Novorossiisk (1867-72), Dorpat (1872-91) and Kazan’ (1891). He lived in Jena from 1891. Brikner worked primarily on the history of Russia in the 17th and 18th centuries; he devoted special attention to political history, cultural history, and the history of finance.
