Diamantina

 

a river in east-central Australia (the state of Queensland). Length, about 750 km. It arises in the Selwyn range and flows to the southwest, cutting across the desert and semidesert plains of the Great Artesian Basin. It comes to an end near the settlement of Goyder’s Lagoon (the state of South Australia), disappearing in the sands.


Diamantina

 

a city in Brazil, located in the state of Minas Gerais. Population, 34,300 (1968). Diamantina is a highway junction and has a railroad station and an airport. It is a center of extraction of diamonds, gold, and rock crystal. In addition cotton and food are produced in Diamantina. An important trade center, Diamantina was founded at the beginning of the 18th century, when diamonds were discovered at the source of the Jequitinhonha River, not far from the city.
