Clairalience

Clairalience is “clear smelling.” It is also known as clairgustance. Quite often at séances the sitters are aware of a strong and particular scent that is associated with the spirit being contacted. This can be the smell of flowers such as roses or lavender, or a particular tobacco. Sometimes it is only the medium who is aware of the smell, but more generally everyone senses it. Such odors can be of great importance in providing proof of contact and proof of survival.
