A set of ideas and practices regarding the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body, which were developed by science fiction author L Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) and practised by followers of Scientology.

Dianetics is intended to redefine the manner in which the soul affects the body; it allegedly provides a means for handling life’s energy to enable a greater efficiency in a person’s spiritual life, counselling a client to help identify and rid him- or herself of emotional and psychosomatic problems. Its primary purpose is to erase traumatic memories (engrams), which the therapist or auditor accomplishes using an “E-meter” (which measures the galvanic skin response).
