a valve or cock acted upon by a float. See Float, 1 (b).

float valve

[′flōt ‚valv] (engineering) A valve whose on-off action is controlled directly by the fall or rise of a float concurrent with the fall or rise of liquid level in a liquid-containing vessel.

float valve, float-controlled valve

A valve which controls the flow of water; its opening or closing depends on the position of a float which rides on the surface of water in a tank, as in a water closet.
