Clarie Coast

Clarie Coast

the coast of eastern Antarctica between 130° and 136° E long., a distance of approximately 350 km. The edge of the mainland glacial shield, the Clarie Coast falls steeply to the sea; in this region it is interrupted only by discharge glaciers. Inland, the surface of the glacial shield rises sharply, more than 1,000 m in 60 km. Clarie Coast was discovered and named by Dumont d’Urville’s French antarctic expedition in 1840. Today research in the area is conducted primarily by Australians. In 1956 it was investigated by a Soviet antarctic expedition.
