Clarke, John H.

Clarke, John H. (Hessin)

(1857–1945) Supreme Court justice; born in New Lisbon, Ohio. He was appointed to the federal district court (1914–16) and to the U.S. Supreme Court (1916–22) by President Wilson. A renowned peacemaker, he stepped down from the bench in 1922 to campaign, albeit unsuccessfully, for the League of Nations.
