Clarke sign

(klahrk sīn) Maneuver used to determine chondromalacia patellae, whereby the patient sits with legs extended on a table and the clinician places the web of a hand proximal to the superior pole of the patella. The person examined is asked to contract the quadriceps while the clinician pushes gently downward on the patella. A positive sign is indicated if pain is experienced during this maneuver or if it is not possible to hold the contraction.
