Diaz, Armando

(ärmän`dō dē`äts), 1861–1928, Italian field marshal. In World War I he replaced (1917) CadornaCadorna, Luigi
, 1850–1928, Italian field marshal. His father, Raffaele Cadorna, was a general in the wars of the Risorgimento and took Rome in 1870. Luigi Cadorna, a count, became the head of the army general staff and reorganized the Italian army before World War I.

 as chief Italian commander. He defeated (1918) the disintegrating Austro-Hungarian army at Vittorio Veneto and concluded (Nov. 3) the armistice, based on unconditional surrender, with Austria-Hungary. Created duca della Vittoria [duke of victory], he was later minister of war (1922–24).
