Berezin, Il’ia Vasil’evich
Born Aug. 9, 1923, in Astrakhan. Soviet physical chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1943.
Berezin graduated from Moscow State University in 1950, and in the same year he joined its staff; from 1969 to 1981 he was dean of the university’s chemistry department, and since 1974 he has been head of its subdepartment of chemical enzymology. Since 1981 he has been director of the A. N. Bakh Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Berezin’s principal works deal with the kinetics and mechanisms of free radical reactions in the liquid phase and with the physical chemistry of enzymatic catalysis.
Berezin has been awarded four orders.
