CCL5 A gene on chromosome 17q11.2-q12 that encodes a cytokine that is a chemoattractant for monocytes, memory T helper cells and eosinophils. CCL5 triggers the release of histamine from basophils and activates eosinophils, is produced by CD8+ T cells and is a major HIV-suppressive factor. It binds to the chemokine receptor CCR5, and suppresses in vitro replication of R5 strains of HIV-1, which use CCR5 as a coreceptor.CCL5
