Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia, Ol’ga Antonovna

Born May 19 (31), 1874; died Aug. 30, 1939, in Leningrad. Soviet medieval historian and paleographer.

Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia was the first woman in Russia to receive a master’s degree (1915) and doctorate (1918) in general history. She was a professor at Leningrad University and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929). Her major works are on cultural history, Latin paleography, and the publication of sources. She was the first scholar in Russia to teach Latin paleography and the other auxiliary disciplines of medieval history. In 1922-39, while working in the manuscript section of the SaltykovShchedrin State Public Library, she compiled scholarly descriptions and printed catalogs of Latin manuscripts of the fifth to tenth centuries.
