Iuzhakova, Elizaveta Nikolaevna

(revolutionary pseudonym, Natasha). Born 1851 in Kherson Province; died Jan. 4 (16), 1883, in the nasleg (small administrative unit) of Kusugan-El’ge, in the ulus (Tatar settlement) of Namtsy, Yakutsk Oblast. Russian revolutionary and Narodnik (Populist). Sister of S. N. Iuzhakov.

The daughter of a nobleman, Iuzhakova studied at the faculty of natural sciences of the University of Zürich from 1869 to 1871. From 1872 to 1875 and again in 1877 and 1878, living in Switzerland, she belonged to the Russian Jacobins, who published the journal Nabat, and to the Society for the Liberation of the People. From 1875 to 1877, Iuzhakova lived in Odessa and took part in the work of revolutionary circles there. During the Serbo-Turkish War of 1876–77, she served as a nurse in the Serbian Army.

Iuzhakova was arrested in Odessa on June 24, 1879. The Odessa Military District Court sentenced her to 15 years’ hard labor, but the sentence was commuted to exile in Siberia. Iuzhakova escaped from exile in 1881, but she was captured and sent to Yakutsk Oblast.
