Confederation of Latin American Workers

an association of the trade unions of the Latin American countries; in existence from 1938 to 1963. It belonged to the World Federation of Trade Unions. The confederation stood for unity of action of the working class and the defense of the interests of the toiling people of Latin America, and it opposed the schismatics in the workers’ and trade union movement and particularly the right-wing leaders of the American trade unions, who created the reactionary Inter-American Regional Labor Organization to counterbalance the confederation. In December 1963 the confederation’s executive committee adopted a resolution disbanding the confederation in conjunction with the imminent creation of a common trade union center for Latin America, the Permanent Congress of Trade Union Unity of Latin American Workers.
