(John Edward Broadbent), 1936–, Canadian political leader. After studying at the Univ. of Toronto (Ph.D., 1966) and the London School of Economics, he taught political science at York Univ. In 1968 he was elected to the House of Commons as a New Democratic partyNew Democratic party(NDP), Canadian political party, founded in 1961 when the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) reorganized itself and entered into close ties with Canadian labor unions, especially the Canadian Labor Congress (CLC).

A popular and effective leader, he resigned his party position in 1989 and gave up his parliamentary seat the following year. From 1990 to 1996 he was president of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development, a Canadian human-rights organization. Broadbent served in parliament again from 2004 to 2006.
