Dean, William (Frishe)

(1899–1981) soldier; born in Carlyle, Ill. He became one of the first heroes of the Korean War when he was captured commanding the 24th Infantry Division in action against a heavy North Korean assault at Teajon (1950). He described his three-year ordeal in a Communist prisoner of war camp in the best-seller, General Dean's Story (1954).
