Evangelical Churches

the name of a number of Protestant churches, including the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg and Helvetian Confessions in Austria; the Danish Lutheran Evangelical Church; the Evangelical Church in the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, and West Berlin; and the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren and the Evangelical Methodist Church in Czechoslovakia. The evangelical churches believe that the source of their teaching is the Holy Scriptures, especially the Gospels (hence their name, from the Greek word for gospel, euangelioh). The majority of these churches are Lutheran.
