On the northeastern border of NV; organized Mar 5, 1869 from Lander County. Name Origin: For the town; meaning of name is undetermined, possibly elk plus -o, a typical railroad name. It has been suggested that the town was named for elk (the animal) or that the word is an Indian term meaning 'first white woman.'
