Eller, Kheino Ianovich

Born Mar. 7, 1887, in Tartu; died June 16, 1970, in Tallinn. Soviet composer and music teacher. People’s Artist of the USSR (1967).

Eller graduated from the Petrograd Conservatory in 1920. He taught at the Higher Music School in Tartu and at the Tallinn Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1940. Eller, who founded the national style in Estonian instrumental music, composed three symphonies (1936, 1947, and 1964); symphonic pictures and poems, including Dawn (1918); a violin concerto (revised version, 1964); five string quartets; and numerous works for piano.

Eller was awarded the Order of Lenin and two other orders.
