Broadmoor Hospital

Broadmoor Hospital

A high-security psychiatric hospital which began in the 1860s as the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. It is the best known of three such facilities in England, and was the only one one until overcrowding led to the construction of the Rampton Secure Hospital in 1912 and Ashworth Hospital in the 1970s.
Most of Broadmoor’s patients have severe mental illness, and many of those also have personality disorders. It housed men and women until 2007, when the women were moved to other facilities.
