a stock character in French and Russian classical tragedy of the 17th and 18th centuries. The confidant is usually a person close to the hero or heroine, such as a nurse, tutor, or secretary. It is a supporting role: in answering the confidant’s questions, the hero reveals his own thoughts, feelings, and actions.
