A measure of investors' faith in the economy and the securities market. A low or deteriorating level of confidence is considered by many technical analysts as a bearish sign.

Confidence Indicator

A measure of the willingness of investors to attempt higher returns by assuming more risk. A confidence indicator may be calculated in a number of different ways. It may be calculated by compiling an index of stocks categorized according to risk, where a higher measure indicates higher confidence. A confidence indicator also may be determined subjectively; for example, a person may take a survey of industry insiders to see how they feel about taking more risk.
