The center of the Twente industrial region, it has a large textile industry, which produces mainly cotton fabrics and employs about one-third of the city’s economically active population. It also has a machine-building industry, which produces textile machinery, pumps, and hoisting equipment, and chemical, footwear, and woodproducts industries.
