On southern border of AL; organized Dec 10, 1868 from Baldwin and Conecuh counties. Name Origin: For Escambia River, probably a Spanish rendering of a Choctaw or Chickasaw Indian word but origin is in dispute. There may be a connection to Spanish cambiar 'to exchange, trade, barter.' River formerly called the Pensacola.

Name Origin: For the river, which forms its eastern border; probably a Spanish rendering of a Choctaw or Chickasaw Indian word but origin is in dispute. River formerly called the Pensacola.
