Dubayy

(Dubai), the major city of the Dubayy sheikhdom which became a member of the United Arab Emirates when that state was formed in 1971. Population, 58,000 (1968, including suburbs). It is a highway junction and a major port and trade center of the Persian Gulf. Oil is extracted near Dubayy (4.2 million tons in 1970).
