Dubinovskii, Lazar

Born Apr. 18 (May 1), 1910, in Faleshty. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the Moldavian SSR (1963); corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1954). Member of the CPSU from 1952.

Dubinovskii studied at the Academy of Art in Bucharest from 1925 to 1930 (in 1929 he studied at the studio of E. A. Bourdelle in Paris). His works include portraits of the Rumanian artist C. Baba (bronze, 1960, Russian Museum, Leningrad), Ho Chi Minh (wood, 1968), and the academician K. I. Skriabin (plaster of Paris, 1961, Tret’iatov Gallery). He created a monument to G. I. Kotovskii (bronze, granite, 1953; in cooperation with K. D. Kitaika, I. G. Pershudchev, and A. I. Posiado) and the Heroic Komsomol monument (bronze, granite, 1958-59); both monuments are in Kishinev. His compositions include the trilogy Fathers and Sons (wood, 1957) and The Seamstresses of Tiraspol’ (aluminum, 1962). These works, which are both in the Art Museum of the Moldavian SSR in Kishinev, depict very few figures. Sharp contrasts between light and shadow, created by the dynamic gestures, poses, and turns and by the rough surface texture of the sculptures, determine the intensely emotional nature of Dubinovskii’s art. Dubinovskii, a recipient of the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR in 1970, has also been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
