The chasm, with its rapids, waterfalls, and curious rock formations, is a popular tourist attraction; Rainbow Falls, 75 ft (23 m) high, is at the southern end of the gorge. The Ausable, a river rising in the Adirondack Mts. and flowing NE to Lake Champlain, continues to carve out the gorge as it passes over the sandstone bedrock. |
