Fire Position

a sector of the terrain occupied by or prepared to be occupied by one or more machine guns, field guns, mortars, tanks, rocket launchers, and other means of concentrating fire.

Fire positions are classified as primary, temporary, and reserve. They are intended, respectively, for performing primary fire missions, for individual (special) missions, and for cases in which it is necessary to maneuver or to abandon the primary fire position. Dummy firing points are set up to confuse the enemy with regard to the number and location of weapons. A distinction is made between concealed fire positions, which are located behind elevations, woods, and other shelters, and open positions, which are designed for direct fire. Fire positions are selected with regard to missions to be performed and terrain conditions; they are then outfitted by engineers and camouflaged.
