Established: 1911.
Location:In northern California near the Oregon border, 15 miles south of Tulelake.
Activities:Hunting, fishing.
Special Features:Small, rocky islands in the lake provide nesting habitat for one of the few remaining American white pelican breeding colonies in the West. On average, about 1,400 pelicans are fledged each year.
Habitats: 46,460 acres consisting of a 20,000 acre lake surrounded by upland habitat of bunchgrass, low sagebrush, and juniper.
Access: Except for limited hunting, the refuge is closed to the public.
Wild life: White pelicans, cormorants, sage grouse, pronghorn antelope, and mule deer.
