a scientific station on the Filchner Ice Shelf, at 77° 43’ S lat., 41° 07’ W long. The station was established by the USA on Feb. 11, 1957, and turned over to Argentina in 1959. From 1957 to 1962 meteorological, actinometric, geophysical, and glaciological observations were made at the station, which served as a base for expeditions into the surrounding area. Ellsworth Station is named in honor of the American aviator L. Ellsworth.
