Dubna

(do͞obnŭ`), town (1989 pop. 66,000), Moscow region, central European Russia, near the confluence of the Volga and Dubna rivers. Founded in 1956, it is the seat of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The institute was established at an international conference in Moscow in 1956; its members included most Communist nations.

a city in Moscow Oblast, RSFSR. Located 128 km north of Moscow on the Volga River near the point where the Dubna River flows into it. On a highway. Dubna is the terminus of the 39 km railroad branch from Verbilki station. Population 44,000 (1970). It was established in 1956 at the time of the organization of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and has a branch of the Moscow Institute of Radiotechnology, Electronics, and Automation.

a river in the Vladimir and Moscow oblasts, RSFSR. It flows into the Volga from the right, 8 km below the Ivan’kovo dam. Length, 167 km; basin area, 5,350 sq km. The Dubna rises on the slopes of the Klin-Dmitrov Range. Its largest tributary is the Sestra, from the left. The city of Dubna is located where the river flows into the Volga.
