ElodeaenUKElodea(waterweed), a genus of perennial aquatic herbs of the family Hydrocharitaceae. The stems are submerged; the leaves are in whorls. There are about ten species, native to the Americas. E. canadensis is found as an import in many regions of the world; in the USSR it occurs in stagnant and sluggish waters in the European portion and Western Siberia. Only female plants are known; they are noted for very rapid vegetative propagation. Extensive growths of the plant obstruct navigation and fishing. The green parts are used as animal feed and fertilizer. Some species are grown in aquariums. ElodeaenUK
