The leaves are alternate, simple, or ternate. The flowers are in racemes; the perianth is four-membered. There are between four and six stamens. The fruit is pod-shaped. There are approximately 150 species, distributed primarily in the tropics and subtropics. In the USSR there are approximately ten species, found in Middle Asia, the Caucasus, and southern European USSR. They grow on arid slopes and in coarse gravels.
