Size: 3,593 acres.
Established: Designated a national historical landmark in 1969; established as a national historical park on December 19, 2002. Includes the key partner sites of Belle Grove Plantation, Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation lands and visitor center, Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation lands, and a developing Shenandoah County Park.
Location:At the intersection of I-81 and Route 66 in the northern Shenandoah Valley near Middletown and Strasburg, VA. The historic Valley Turnpike (Route 11) runs through the park, which is embedded within the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District, a National Heritage Area (see separate listing in National Heritage Areas section).
Facilities:Two major sites, Cedar Creek Battlefield Visitor Center and Belle Grove Plantation House, are open to the public. In addition, a private campground is located within the park. The National Park Service has no developed facilities at this time.
Activities:The partner sites will continue to be owned and operated independently, allowing such activities as the annual Battle of Cedar Creek Reenactment (mid October) to continue within the park. Activities include camping, driving tours, and special events.
Special Features:Park commemorates a nationally significant Civil War landscape and antebellum plantation by sharing the story of Shenandoah Valley history from early settlement through the Civil War and beyond. Throughout the area there are historic, natural, cultural, military, and scenic resources.
