Cleveland, James L.

(1932– ) gospel singer, composer; born in Chicago, Ill. He sang in choirs as a boy and began writing songs while a teenager. In the 1950s he sang with several gospel groups and composed many songs including "He's Using Me" (1955). He released over 50 albums and won two Grammy awards. In 1968 he formed the Gospel Music Workshop of America, which had 500,000 members by the mid-1980s.
